That's an option, but doesn't help for those users who have a handset good enough of rendering both types of site, and who want to be able to switch between them.
I use an iPhone all the time, and I prefer to use made-for-mobile sites if they are available, but occassionally I switch to the corresponding desktop page for some advanced feature.
To me it should be very similar to the interstitial page you get when you go to expedia.com from a UK desktop: the site says something like "Would you really like to proceed to expedia.com? Or did you mean expedia.co.uk?" - and then you are given a choice to remember that setting.
Detection plays a part but it should never overrule user choice.
