I agree with both posts above.
Device detection, simply by use of CSS media selection, can do a great job of targeting different devices. Also, more and more "phones" render HTML much better and are getting better with each generation. There is little evidence to point to the need for a .mobi TLD, in fact, it's quite the opposite. Any large scale .com site will have a "mobi" version and the user won't have to remember another TLD, the site will simply deliver the appropriately rendered content for whatever device is making the request.
Would you build a different store location for people with smaller cars, or build some smaller parking spaces in the lot you already have?
IMHO, .mobi and other TLD's are just a way for domain registrars to make more money. Sorry GD.
